Boa sorte. Enjoy Porto. I am 7 years ( contentedly) into Portugal, originally from the suburbs of NYC, from the 70’s to 2015 in Hamburg, a 2 yr stint in SW England ( tiny village ). But leaving your life in the City? I always think of Joanie Mitchell, you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone…tell me again when the novelty wears off.

My wife and I live in Porto also, having moved in 2022. We also had bought our forever home, a one floor house (for future accessibility) in a diverse neighborhood of Austin. We have no regrets.

Very happy to have stumbled across your substack, Devyn. Are you guys planning to buy an old house and transform it in Porto? Sounds like you have the skills! I look forward to reading more about your journey and watching it unfold as you become a part of the Porto community.

Kaila, glad you found me. 🥰

There are indeed some spectacular old houses here in Porto, but alas, we will be renting for the next five or six years (our funds tied up in real estate in Philadelphia, which is our source of passive income required to live here on our visa).

That said ,we are renting a fabulous apartment which was built in 1971. Given that it is now over 50 years old, I guess it could qualify as an old place. Honestly, as much as I would love to have a house here, I could see myself living in our apartment for a very long time.
